Matilda Forsberg

Matilda Forsberg's paintings explore family dynamics, heritage, identity, and perception. Her practice is inspired by the complexities of family and cultural tradition, and its emotional and psychological influence on individuals as independent beings. Often sourcing imagery from family photo archives she is interested in what emerges when looking closely at captured moments from the past and the implications of memory on the narrative.  Her work frequently features figures in group settings, their individuality blurred and mutable, but not erased, occupying dream-like spaces inspired by the Nordic landscape.

Originally from Sweden, Matilda Forsberg currently lives and works in New York and New Jersey. Her work has been exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Portland, OR, and Sweden. In 2020, her work was presented in Mother Tongue as part of The Immigrant Artist Biennial. She is the awardee of the 2021 Liquitex Residency and the recipient of the 2021 City of Newark and Newark Arts Creative Catalyst Fund Grant, and the 2020 Newark Art Accelerator grant by Project for Empty Space and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Forsberg was awarded Best in Show Award 2020, at Wide Open 11 (BWAC Gallery, Brooklyn, NY), by Paulina Pobocha, Associate Curator, Department of Painting and Sculpture, MoMA. She received her BFA in Painting from Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon.
